Ugly Sweater Week’s Day 5 Match-Ups

Welcome to the fifth day of Ugly Sweater Week here on Hockey By Design!

In the coming days, we’ll show you a holiday tradition we’d love the NHL to start enacting: in the 7 days before the NHL takes their 3-day Christmas break, every team wears its most historically ugliest jersey in their games, creating a truly festive and horrific display on the ice.

By ‘ugliest’, we mean the jerseys that are a combination of being dreadful by (a) being more ostensibly garish rather than poorly designed, (b) by the jerseys that’s generally accepted as being the team’s ugliest jersey outside of our opinion, and (c) our opinion. It includes the jersey collection of the entire franchise (i.e. – including jerseys prior to relocating to its current location) and consideration will be given to (mostly) ensure the home teams are in coloured jerseys and the road teams in white.

Tonight’s match-ups for December 21 could look something like this:

Calgary at Pittsburgh

The Flames’ awfully-striped jerseys takes on the Pens’ obnoxious golden jerseys.

Phoenix at Ottawa

The original tacky-logo and tacky-striped Coyotes jerseys go against the historic Senators (modelled by the Binghamton Senators here)

Colorado at Los Angeles

The marooned Ranger-rip-offs take on the Burger Kings.

Buffalo at Boston

The Buffaslug returns! Buffalo welcomes one of the lesser entries in the Winter Classic jersey library, the weak-B-ed Bruins.

Detroit at Toronto

The lead-up to the Winter Classic match-up has the ’80s Leafs visiting the fake-historic Wings.

Carolina at Tampa Bay

Cue the Brass Bonanza! The Hurricanes dip into their Whaler days to uncover these green jerseys against the gawdy Lightning.

Anaheim at NY Islanders

Two of the worst jerseys to ever grace the NHL, this might be the whole week’s winner for worst (read: best) matchup. Wild Wing against the Highliner captain.

New Jersey at Washington

The Christmas-themed Devils take on the Capitals. I know it’s the Capitals because it says so on the jersey.

Philadelphia at Columbus

The Flyers don’t have many bad jerseys, so the chrome-logo jersey sees some wear this week, including today against the neon-yellow Jackets. 

Montreal at Nashville

It’s like taking a pee during a haircut! Barber poll jerseys versus urine jerseys.

St. Louis at Edmonton

The BLUES visit the pre-NHL, WHA-era Oilers with the over-bearing shoulder yokes.

Dallas at San Jose

The awfully-designed star-striped Dallas visits the Sharks in their original home-teals.
