Hockey’s getting back into the swing of things a little earlier this year with the return of the World Cup of Hockey, kicking off at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on September 17th. Our crew already broke down each team’s uniforms when they were revealed back in March, but the masks are rolling out fast for the highly anticipated tournament, so let’s take a look.

Like with the jerseys, the masks are sorted by regions and countries, so click on each of the images below to see who will be wearing what for each team.

We’ll continue to add more masks as they’re revealed, so keep checking back between now and September 17th!

I’m starting to realize that I’m in the minority as someone who generally can’t stand the completely over-done disaster designs that come from Gunnarsson. You can’t see what is happening on most of his masks when you’re looking at them up close, let alone the design vomit they become from the seats in the stadium. The best masks are simple, bold and personal. Belfour. Potvin. Joseph. Brodeur.

He has lots of technical ability and zero design taste. It seems like every mask is a personal challenge to cram in as many ridiculous details as possible using “proprietary technology” like HOLOSPHERE FX and G.L.O.W. TECH FX 2.0 that 99% of people will never see and will not be striking from any distance other than directly under your nose or in the dark.

There are some merits to the Koskinen mask and baaaarely to Holtby’s. Others by Dave are a visual dumpster fire that no kid is going to grow up dreaming about having painted on their brain bucket someday.

Sorry for the vitriol, just had to get it out there. But as with most things creative, this $%&@ is totally subjective.

I might say it in a little softer tone, but I do agree that Dave’s masks are not my favorite. They are usually very busy and overall unappealing to me (especially when he started using “glitter” looks, especially on Hank’s masks, that made me feel I was back in the 70s with those glitter iron-on t-shirts AND the glow-in-the-dark stuff is just not my cup of tea.)

I much prefer the art of Todd Miska of Miska Designs, David Leroux of Diel Airbrush, sometimes Ray Bishop of Bishop Designs, Sylvie Marsolais of Sylabrush, Stephane Bergeron of Griff Airbrush, and Jason Livery of HeadStrongGrafx, and a relatively quiet painter in the NHL world Jesse Acciacca of Jesse’s Custom Design. I would prefer to see one of their masks any day. I feel bad for saying it, but Dave’s just don’t appeal to me as much.
