Please Note: This post was originally posted in 2019, so while most of the links still work, we cannot guarantee it anymore. However, we have updated and released a new Top Ten Christmas Gifts list for 2020, which you can visit by clicking here

(Ed Note: This is *not* paid content! None of the websites/businesses listed below have paid us to be included on this list. These are all items we honestly think you would love because we love (or have loved) them ourselves. Enjoy!)

I know, I know, Halloween is barely over, but if you want to get something really unique and cool (and even customized!) for that hockey fan on your list – and not whatever ornament you can find that’s left at 7-Eleven at 11pm on Christmas Eve – you need to start thinking about searching and ordering something to get it in time to wrap it and put it the tree. Plus, our analytics tells us that people are already searching for gift ideas on previous posts. So, that’s where we come in.

Here at HbD, we’ve put together a list of strange, or wonderful, or obscure, or geeky, hockey-related gifts you might be wanting for yourself, or might be perfect for that special person on your gift list. So relax, pull out your list and start crossing off some names. You can thank us later. (All prices $USD)

1. The HbD Market

Well, of course we’d promote our own stuff. Why? Because we own them, we love them, and we know you and every hockey fan on your gift list will love them. And we’ve got stuff for every team in the league. Posters, stickers, t-shirts, mugs, pillows, we’ve got something for everyone.

And we’ve just released a bunch of new products, including goalie mask stickers (perfect for stocking stuffers)! And homages to retro video games! As well as all your other favourites from our Market. Oh, and there might just be our annual sale coming…

Visit The Hockey By Design Market Website (starting at $4.00)

2. Bonejack Designs

You know we here at HbyD love goalies. And we love design. And we love art. Turns out that Charles at Bone Jack Designs does too, with stylized illustrations/prints of a huge variety of professional goalies (both current and historic), you can probably find your favourite(s) in there.

If not, Charles does commissioned work too, so feel free to contact him and ask for something really special for that goalie-lover on your list.

Available via Facebook, or Instagram, or email (starting at $20.00)

3. HockeyBabbler Pride Pins/Stickers

Rep your pride and your hockey fandom with these LGBTQ+ hockey glove shaped pride pins and/or stickers, designed in Seattle by HockeyBabbler.

It embodies the message that hockey is truly for everyone. The stickers are long-lasting die cut sticker, and the lapel pin features a gunmetal grey finish, a rubber pin back, and five vibrant colors of hard enamel.

4. Wintergreen Stitch

Most people don’t associate cross-stitching with hockey, but Wintergreen Stitch married the two with some pretty remarkable results, creating an unique way of showing your hockey/team fandom.

There’s a variety of different team jerseys that’s been made, but you could also see if there’s a commissioned work in the cards for you?

At Second String Leather Company, vintage goalie gear is revived, re-purposed and restitched into one-of-a-kind, hand crafted leather goods. 6. We Want Fish Sticks

Written by Nicholas Hirshon, it’s not too often you come across whole books about branding in hockey, especially one that’s as…umm…interesting as the Islander’s fish-sticks era.

During a rebranding process that lasted three torturous seasons, the Islanders unveiled a new mascot, new uniforms, new players, a new coach, and a new owner that were supposed to signal a return to championship glory. Instead, the team and its fans endured a twenty-eight-month span more humiliating than what most franchises witness over twenty-eight years. We Want Fish Sticks examines this era through period sources and interviews with the people who lived it.

Available at University of Nebraska Press ($29.95)

7. Hot Hands Hockey

You’ve seen old hockey sticks turned into a variety of things…but what about phone cases? Sure, why not. With an abundance of High Tech carbon fiber damaged sticks laying around with colorful graphics, why not use this virtually indestructible composite to protect our phones?

Each case is handmade in the USA and constructed from game used composite hockey sticks used by professional, collegiate, and minor league players, completed with unique ‘battle scars’ from real game action. They’re engineered to be ultra slim while giving your phone carbon fiber protection.

Available at Hot Hands Hockey (starting at $25.00)

8. This Team is Ruining My Life

You probably know Steve “Dangle” Glynn from YouTube or Sportsnet, but this is Steve Dangle telling his accidentally on purpose journey through sports media so far. In between tales of Steve’s adventures, both online and off, This Team Is Ruining My Life is also a kind of how-to (or how-not-to) guide: in an ever-evolving media landscape, sometimes you have to get creative to find the job you want.

Available at ECW Press ($19.95 Cdn)

9. Anthony Zych Design Co.

We were totally wowed by Anthony’s recent Inktober series of images that featured a uniquely designed poster for an NHL game (almost) every night throughout October. The better news is that he’s got them for sale on his Etsy store. Limited to 25 copies and available at 12×16, these museum-quality matte prints are the perfect sized print for any hockey fan cave, bedroom, or cubicle.

Know someone who went to one of these games? This might be the perfect gift for them. But seriously, they’re so great that almost any hockey fan would like them regardless of the teams shown.

Available on Etsy ($25.00)

10. Crown & Paw Ice Hockey Player

Know a hockey-lover who loves their pet? Why not turn their pet into a hockey player? And it’s super-easy to do. Crown & Paw designs a custom pet artwork – capturing the animal’s unique personality and facial expression – to create incredible one-of-a-kind pet art.

Printed on to glossy, high quality posters, the posters are available in three sizes and can be easily framed at home. Just pick your portrait style (this one is their only hockey-specific one, but there’s a wide variety of other options) and size, upload the pet’s photo using, place your order, and then relax!

Available at Crown & Paw (starting at $29.95)
