NHL Playoffs 2013 Predictions (Round 2) HbD-Style

Henrik Lundqvist, Alex Ovechkin
Once Ovechkin shook the hand of King Henrik, the first round of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs ended. But not before some epic collapses by a trio of Canadian teams, all in strangely different ways. All in all, a pretty exciting first round. And as for my design-based picks, I went a respectable 5-for-8 (including calling Bruins in 7 in OT perfectly, much to the Leafs' chagrin), with only the Canadiens, Canucks and Blues letting their brand down. So, I've already matched the miserable record of Keep reading...

NHL Playoffs 2013 Predictions (Round 1) HbD-Style

Playoffs
I did this last year (and miserably went 5 for 15), and since it's that awesome time of the year where the playoffs have arrived and fans of the 16 remaining teams actually wish to go through 2 months of stress and nail-biting rather than just 2 weeks, I'm taking a look at the playoff matchups from a branding/design perspective. Some of the content is regurgitated from last year, but there's some new stuff too for the new teams that weren't invited to the dance last year. We'll compare the overall Keep reading...

BTLNHL Vintage: The Colorado Rockies

colorado-rockies-1978-79
The Avalanche are not the NHL's first foray into the Denver area. And MLB's Rockies are not the first team in Denver to be called as such. In 1976, the Kansas City Scouts moved to Denver to become the Colorado Rockies, until 1982 when they moved again to New Jersey to become the Devils. For six years, there was NHL hockey in Colorado and for one of those seasons (1979-80), they were coached by the most famous coach in hockey, Don Cherry. Not surprisingly then, the slogan for the team that year was Keep reading...

HbD News: 2014 Winter Classic Jerseys Announced!

940-jersey-v-2
(Photo above from the Associated Press. I had complications that prevented me from attending the press conference and photographing it myself. Like not knowing about it. And living on the other side of the continent.) Just this morning, the NHL announced the return on the Winter Classic featuring the teams that should have participated in he 2013 Winter Classic, had one been held (Yeah, remember the lockout that happened? Don't worry, neither do I.): the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Keep reading...

HbD News: Vancouver Introduces New(Old) ‘Millionaires’ Uniforms

tumblr_lnli033C4O1qcf0duo1_1280
Hot damn! A few years ago, right before I was actively thinking about purchasing an old Vancouver Millionaires jersey for myself, the Canucks bought up the rights to everything Millionaires-related and all of the merchandise promptly disappeared, leaving me wondering and hoping that they would eventually surface again, if not on the ice during an actual game, then at least in the stores. After teasing us with images of a photo shoot from a couple weeks ago, that day is finally here, as the Keep reading...

BTLNHL Vintage: The Hartford Whalers

whalers-howe
I remember the first time I saw the "H" in the Hartford Whalers logo. I think I was around 9 or 10 years old and it absolutely blew my mind. Just in case you still haven't had the same Whalers epiphany, here you go. You're welcome. As anyone who has read this blog knows, I'm a big fan of simplicity and, when it can be used effectively, clever design. When designing a logo, whether for a hockey team or any type of business, it's extremely difficult to work in a meaningful design element in a very Keep reading...

Behind the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 1992 Rebranding

Screen Shot 2013-01-23 at 4.03.05 PM
One of the Hockey By Design readers alerted me to a new post from a couple days ago that gives a little bit of background in the rebranding of the Penguins logo and jerseys in 1992, after winning their first two Stanley Cups. It was put out by Vance Wright Adams, the design firm that created the redesign logo and jerseys. And when I say "a little bit of background", I emphasize a little bit. The firm doesn't really get into the nitty-gritty of it, but simply gives more of a recap of the situation Keep reading...

The End of the Lockout

ScreenShot2012-09-16at12.28.27AM_crop_650x440
This has been an unusual season so far, so I'm going to do something unusual myself: rant about hockey that has nothing to do with design. After hearing the news this morning, I was elated but not surprised. I've been saying for weeks to anyone who will listen that both sides were probably waiting until the very last minute to get whatever they could get. If the other side collapsed first for some reason and gave in to all the demands, then great, they would sign the deal and get a longer season. Keep reading...
